The BILT app provides 3D interactive instructions to millions of users, ranging from professionals in training to customers assembling furniture. Originally designed for mobile, the Apple Vision Pro enabled a new potential for the app to be experienced in extended reality.

BILT brought ANML on board to prepare their app for the launch of Apple’s Vision Pro. Diving into the world of spatial computing, we quickly got familiar with the XR technologies and designed an optimized app that transforms mundane instructions into a memorable experience.

Problem

Traditional instruction manuals are tedious and difficult to follow, often causing frustration and disengagement. The BILT app on Vision Pro presents an opportunity to revolutionize how users interact with instructions by leveraging spatial computing to enhance engagement, motivation, and retention. However, the challenge lies in preventing users from feeling overwhelmed by the complexity and interactivity of this new platform.

Objective

Create an intuitive user experience that strikes the perfect balance between simplicity and captivation. Users should flow through instructions effortlessly while absorbing and retaining every necessary detail for completing the procedure.

Pushing the boundaries with XR technologies.

Any app that works on an iPad can work on the Vision Pro as is. However, to truly optimize the app for Vision Pro, we identified which moments we could utilize XR technologies for to create an experience that is more evolved and immersive. Without the restraints of a mobile interface, we were able to design an experience where users feel more engaged and empowered as they interact with 3D objects that are complemented by an interface rather than compromised by it.

Optimizing for real world use cases.

We aimed to design an experience that seamlessly blends the two worlds of digital and reality. From placing a model next to your physical product for side-by-side accuracy to scaling up an M5 x 12mm screw as large as yourself, we leveraged everything the Vision Pro developer kit offered to create an experience that not only enhances your real world tasks, but makes it more intriguing.

The future of instructional experiences.

The BILT app's initial launch represents a significant step toward the future of instructional experiences. A strong use case where this app shows promise is within the training world, where users have been able to complete a 40 minute training procedure in just 10 minutes when learning through the app on Vision Pro. So far, the app has led to a partnership with Siemens, who will leverage this technology to provide immersive step-by-step guided instructions for electricians.
